The unit consists of nine members: Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark, Haechan (formerly known as Donghyuck) and later added Johnny, Doyoung, and Jungwoo. On July 7, they had their official debut stage on the music program M Countdown, performing their title track "Fire Truck" and "Once Again" from their album. Their debut EP NCT #127 was released digitally on July 10 and physically on July 11. The 3rd season of NCT Life, which features NCT 127 in Paju, premiered on July 16, 2016. On July 29, the unit released the single "Taste the Feeling" for the project SM STATION in collaboration with Coca-Cola.

On March 14, 2018, NCT 127 will release a music video for the song "TOUCH", which will be a part of the NCT 2018 EMPATHY album.

In September 2018, SM Entertainment announced that the unit will be releasing their first studio album NCT #127 Regular-Irregular on October 12, 2018, which is going to include Jungwoo as a new member of NCT 127 and it was promoted by the title track "Regular", which was released both in Korean and English. Furthermore, the repackaged version of the album, NCT #127 Regulate, featuring "Simon Says" was released on November 23 and due to his preparations to debut in NCT's fourth, Chinese unit, WayV, Winwin halted his activities with the unit and didn't participate in the promotions activities for the reissue. On December 19 it was also confirmed that Haechan would be taking a hiatus after suffering an injury.

On March 18, 2019 NCT 127 released "Wakey-Wakey", the title track off of their debut Japanese studio album, Awaken, which has seen its daylight one month later, on April 17. During the same month, they've also announced the release of their fourth mini-album, NCT #127 We Are Superhuman on May 24, 2019, featuring the title track "Superhuman", as also "Highway to Heaven", which was previously showcased during the North American leg of their NEO CITY – The Origin tour. Besides this, We Are Superhuman became the group's second project to enter Billboard's weekly album charts and the English version of "Highway to Heaven" was released on July 18, however one month later, SM announced that Jungwoo will take a break from the activities due to health issues and it was revealed in November he will rejoin the group at the start of the next decade. Additionally, NCT 127 have performed at multiple events outside of South Korea in a span of next months, including the Global Citizen Festival and Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.

The group began the new decade with the release of a shortened music video for "Dreams Come True", the final track off of their second full-length album, titled Neo Zone as a gift to their fans and the part of the "127 Day". The clip also marked Jungwoo's return from his hiatus. Before the release of the album, which was supported by the title track "Kick It", other songs from it were revealed since mid-February of 2020 until its official release on March 6 and on May 18, NCT 127 also have managed to release Neo Zone: The Final Round as its repackaged version. The group was also a part of NCT's second project, RESONANCE and the song "Music, Dance" was released along with twelve other tracks from its first part on October 12.

On February 17, 2021, the group released their second Japanese mini album, LOVEHOLIC, which was promoted by the title track "Gimme Gimme".
