Kim Jong-hyun (김종현), better known by the mononym Jonghyun (종현), was a South Korean singer-songwriter, and radio DJ. He was a member of the boy group SHINee, as well as the project group S.M. The Ballad. He was born on April 8, 1990 in Hwayang-dong, Gwangjin District, Seoul, South Korea. Jonghyun made his solo debut in January 2015, with his first mini-album BASE, he released his first album She Is, on May 2016.

On December 18, 2017, Jonghyun passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning. Investigators believe he died from inhaling either toxic fumes or smoke, as they discovered coal briquettes burnt on a frying pan upon arriving at the apartment. The police stated that, at the request of Jonghyun's family, a post-mortem would not be carried out, and they declared his death a possible suicide. A public funeral was held on December 21. He was moved from the hospital to a private funeral attended only by his family and close friends, and was then laid to rest in an undisclosed location.

Idols such as BoA, EXO, BTS, attended the three-day funeral. Following Jonghyun's death, fellow singer and friend Nine9, of the band Dear Cloud, posted on Instagram Jonghyun's suicide note which he had sent to her two or three days before his December 9 concert.
